Need some help solving a problem

December 19, 2013 Hello, So, here we are in Palau, in a beautiful anchorage. We were about to go explore the Rock Islands, but when I put Tenaya in gear there was a terrible grinding noise. This happens in forward and reverse. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the prop. When we manually turn the shaft the grinding noise is easy to hear in the engine room but I can't tell exactly where it is coming from. Maybe the stern gland/bearing? Maybe the Centaflex Flexible coupling? Maybe the gear box? My plan is to disconnect the flexible coupling and then move the shaft, hereby seeing if the noise is on the hull side or the engine side. But I don't have a manual or any information about the Centaflex Flexible Coupling (attached to a Yanmar 4JH4E engine.) There seems to be a number of points I could disconnect it, but I'm not sure which is the best choice. Any idea where you would disconnect it? And which will require the least critical alignment when reassembling? Thanks for your help!! We are not in a place where Tenaya can easily be lifted out of the water, so I need to fix this problem before we move on. Jim jimthomsen@outlook.com
